We built the Shield’s main set, the police station called “the Barn” on stage at the Prospect Studios in Los Feliz. The set was unusual in that it was a two story set with two staircases built so that the 16mm steadicam feel of the streets could be continued without losing energy on stage. The concept was that the city gave the department an old church in a run down area to convert into a working police station. We contrasted the old plaster texture of the church with new storefront walls, and utilitarian paneling and cinder block. The paint had a hot gloss finish to make you feel the heat of LA. The views within the set were always long but never clear – always with some foreground obstruction. Nothing was meant to be cut and dried. We built a great deal on location having to often shoot 4 locations in a day. We often found two and built the others with in push moves of the found ones.
